The book with a subtitle Political Prosthesis & Knowledge of the Body is the first thorough monograph on Stelarc’s work worldwide. Even though there are numerous catalogues, texts and visual and textual references available, not a single book has yet been published that would be integrally dedicated to Stelarc.
The present book gathers and lists all of the most important Stelarc’s projects, along with numerous aesthetic and historical opinions on them, it publishes Stelarc’s basic texts and keeps a record of his historical interventions with the body, new media, virtual environments and telematic arts.
As an introduction, the book features important Stelarc’s texts, followed by a detailed visual and textual representation of his key projects. The book brings essays on Stelarc’s work, written by Arthur and Marilouise Kroker, Timothy Murray and Marina Gržinić.
The book is a theoretical, philosophical and critical insight into the work of Stelarc, his crucial, historical and future perceiving visions of the body, new technologies. The book restores a foundation for the manifesto- testament of Stelarc’s productive, inventive and pioneering investment, or yet, approaches the art of the new media.
Marina Gržinić Mauhler is a philosopher, media artist and theoretician from Ljubljana. She works as a researcher at the SAZU Institute of Philosophy.
