Philosophers and Thespians: Staging Concepts • international symposium

19. september 2019, Ljubljana, Nova pošta, Robbova 15

It all began with Plato's infamous claim that the truth can only be found beyond theatre, beyond the veil of appearances. At the same time, however, Plato discussed theatre in all seriousness and even argued that a well functioning ideal republic is in fact the most perfect kind of a theatrical performance. In a certain way thus even Plato allowed for a certain theatricality of truth, which quickly became one of the most controversial questions in the history of philosophy. The symposium Philosophers and Thespians: Staging Concepts will be dedicated to this very question, in the framework of contemporary political philosophy and philosophy of art.

The symposium celebrates the publication of the new Slovenian book by Mladen Dolar, Staging Concepts: Writings on Art (Maska, 2019) and the Slovenian translation of Freddie Rokem’s Philosophers and Thespians: Thinking Performance (Maska, 2019, trans. Jernej Županič). These books will be available during the symposium at a special discounted price.
