Marc Augé: Non-Places. Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity

Non-Places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity, originally published by French publisher Seuil, is a basic work of the urban anthropology which has been translated in a number of languages. The author deals with topical phenomena in the contemporary global society, in particular with places he refers to as non-places, i.e. airports, shppping malls, hotels, motorways etc. These ambivalent places are the venues of contant movement, consumption, and communication; they don't share any similar symbolic connections, there's no play of identities. They exist as transitional, anonymous, functional places only perceived in a partial and incoherent manner. In the author's view, the opposite to a non-place is the anthropological place that bears identity, relations and history; it takes the form of a concrete place which represents to a person an important hub in a network of relations, invested with symbolism and meaning, memories, experience (for example an altar, birthplace, public square etc.).
It is the first book publication of this author in Slovene.
