100 Years of Opera Performance

On the 100th anniversary of the erection of the house of the provincial theatre in Ljubljana (the present-day SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana), Maska’s editorial board decided to dedicate a little more space to the Opera and simultaneously to critically assess the current Opera production. Along with that fact, they emphasize in the introduction: “Our preoccupation is not to ‘humiliate anyone and drag them through the mud’, but a simple and naïve wish to have the chance to see good opera performances once in a while.”

Thus the issue, that is practically entirely dedicated to the reflection on the opera, brings an interview with Gerard Mortier, an article on Maria Callas, Rosini’s cooking recipes, an article by Rastko Močnik entitled To Think the Opera (that being at the same time the title of the theoretical part of the theme section), a representation of Stockhausen’s project Licht by author Alcred Coenen, Ðurða Otržen writes about the notion of libretto, Matjaž Barbo about the Opera as a structure in time, and Matjaž Berger about Kogoj’s Black masks.

Perhaps two more things should be mentioned in connection with this issue: a text by Emil Hrvatin entitled The Innocent Cruelty, published in a Dutch dance magazine Notes in May 1992, speaks about Betontanc and is actually the first longer article on this theatre phenomenon of the 90s, and Eda Čufer in her column introduces an important semantic notion in the writing of the history of contemporary Slovenian theatre: the notion of the Third Generation.
