The New Slovenian Theatre Production

This issue of Maska, published in 1993, brought mostly longer texts on opuses and performance interventions by the most important theatre directors and choreographers of that time (Miler, Taufer, Pipan, Hrvatin, Repnik, Živadinov, Zlatar Grey, Peljhan, Jablanovec, Farič, Grapefruit). The editors have decided to merge the progressive performance poetics, irrespective of the form of production that the then progressive directors and choreographers worked in. Simon Kardum in his introductory article Pathetic and Irresponsible criticises cultural policy and describes his status of a member of an expert commission for performance arts within the Ministry of Culture, analyses the budget proportions of the independent and the institutions, and finds that the state in which the non-institutionalised find themselves is unendurable and that the money is unjustly distributed.

The theoretical theme section brings texts by Josette Feral, Michael Kirby and Gerald Ribkin, and an essay by Emil Hrvatin. In the section Constructors of the Modern Thought, Maska places a fundamental, informational article on a member of Bauhaus, Oskar Schlemmer (Helena Pivec), Schlemmer’s programme text The Man and the Artistic Figure, and the section also features sketches of the triad ballet. The interview section covers Vadim Fiškin and Steven Durland.
