Up to Nature

MASKA, vol. XXVIII, No. 153–154 (spring 2013)

The editorial board of Maska spent a long time pondering on how to accurately translate the phrase “up to na-ture” into Slovene without losing its multi-faceted dimensions. The English expression, namely, presumes an apparent spatial dimension, and especially the “will(ingness)” of nature itself; the Slovene translation cannot capture these facets without sounding extremely “awkward” and “unnatural”. But we eventually had to decide. K naravi / Up to Nature is the title of the subject that is the central topic of this 2013 spring issue of Maska. This time, we focus on in-depth considerations of the ecological cultural productions and topics in the performing arts of the last few years, and on the complex relationships between ecology and artistic practices, with a special emphasis on performances created in the summer of 2012 in different natural environments in the framework of the international partner project Up to Nature. Maska took part in the project on the initiative of Thomas Frank from the Viennese production house brut, while our board contributed an article about the international festival HISTeRIA, organised above the village of Gračišče in Slovenian Istria, which gathers crowds of artists from all over the world each summer: musicians, artists, puppeteers, dancers, performers, acrobats, clowns, visual artists and storytellers meet there to share their stories, knowledge and art with the festival’s visitors. In addition, this issue is opened by our standard section, Love and Sovereignty, which presents a dialogue between Nenad Jelesijević and Suzana Milevska about artistic practices based on the strategy of renaming; it concludes with a reflection on Ljubljana’s
international festival Lutke 2012 (Puppets 2012) and a new section entitled Criticism without Adjectives, which opens a space for inventive critical reflection on contemporary performing practices. (Amelia Kraigher, translated by Polona Glavan)
