GOOD LUCK, DANCE

What you see before you is a special edition of Maska on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Contemporary Dance Association Slovenia. In addition to an in-depth article on the history of the association by Rok Vevar, the magazine contains individual pieces and fragments revealing the thoughts, ideas, history and testimonies of both former and current actors on the Slovenian contemporary dance scene, but its main point is to wish you all another 25 successful years. The future of contemporary dance depends on whether we can come together in the years to come. So good luck, contemporary dance!

 

The issue before you consists of five chapters. 5x5 is the basic formal guiding principle of the issue that, however, ended up going to pieces in the course of the editing process; as we felt this was symptomatic of the precarious position of contemporary dance, we decided to keep the broken structure. The end result is an issue that, due to the impossibility of the task of putting together a whole, represents a collection of fragments where the empty spaces themselves are revealing.1 It delineates particular perspectives, the empty spaces of which testify to the constitution of the scene that has always been burdened with the struggle for survival and the gradual loss of a sense of common things. In the last twenty-five years, the scene has been bruised by broken communities and failed projects as attested by the authors’ direct texts; it is no wonder then that the traces of  emories were written with a lump in the throat. These traces did, however, unearth everything that has been done in the past. And there is much that has been done.

Naturally, this review of the situation also gives rise to some potentiality and the re-discovery of purpose as well as a sense of enthusiasm that some things can in fact happen and some things can be done. It seems lately that some of the actors have again recognised the necessity of activism and connecting with other people, realising that without it, the scene would simply shut itself off and have no point of contact with the outside world and the public space. Thus, these are valuable testimonies that not only speak about what has been but also what must and can be done in order to fulfil at least some of the Association’s objectives identified by Ksenija Hribar in the founding documents a quarter of a century ago.

This issue was edited by three editors, one departing (Andreja Kopač) and two new editors (Alja Lobnik and Pia Brezavšček). Each of us has assumed responsibility for part of the contents and individual editorials. It is very rare that what is to come is inaugurated by collective work. Invitations to work are also rare. Younger generations on the scene, if we can still count ourselves as belonging to them, rarely manage to find themselves in relatively stable working conditions with more decision- making responsibilities. The saturated scene and established relationships that have been around since the 1990s, when power relations and their main actors established themselves, are closing the points of entry for newcomers. The latter are usually kept outside on the precarious edge, and the scene thus ensures the reproduction of power relations and a workforce that is willing to accept unfavourable working conditions.

Maska was founded in 1920 by the Ljubljana sub-committee of the Association of Theatre Players of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Udruženje gledaliških igralcev Kraljevine SHS). In 1985, the Association of Cultural Organisations of Slovenia (Zveza kulturnih organizacij Slovenije) revived this publication under the title of Maske. In 1991, its original name was restored and its co-founder – Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis – reinstated.
