SEMIOCAPITALISM – seminar, part 1

The erasure of European specificity by global capitalism. A comprehensive exposition of semiocapitalism and its two forms: the precarization of labour and the financialization of capital. This process has been completed and is irreversible. The Occupy Movement was the last attempt at resistance.

Tuesday, 20 May 2014
10.00–13.00 and 15.00–17.00
Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM), Maistrova 3
SEMIOCAPITALISM – seminar, part 2

The defeat of the Occupy Movement (in Europe, the USA and the Arab world) and anthropological mutation. The subsumption of the general intellect under semiocapital and the subjugation of the knowledge production system. Mutation is manifested as the reformatting of cognition, which is captured in the digital linguistic machine. The psychopathology of mutation. Current directions of research. Evolutionary morphogenesis and neuroplasticity.

9.00–10.30
Faculty of Arts, Aškerčeva 2, lecture room no. 18 (ground floor of the Faculty of Arts)
Selling one’s soul to capital
– lecture
The subsumption (capture) of cognitive activity under capitalist production has been the key process in the last 50 years. International social movements, which reached their peak in 1968, are a sign of this process, and the formation of a global network its main manifestation.
Capitalism is transforming into semiocapitalism, but the capture of cognitive activity (and emotionality as such) leads to new forms of alienation: mental distress, depression, panic. Post-workerist and poststructuralist thought has produced concepts that can explain cognitive transformation, but they are unable to offer forms of subjectivation or autonomous organisation.

Wednesday, 21 May 2014
19.00–20.30
Atrium of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Novi trg 2
When the soul is put to work: the fate of the cognitariat in post-industrial society
– panel discussion
Participants: Franco Berardi – Bifo, Nikolai Jeffs
Moderator: Andrej Pavlišič
Contemporary capitalism tries to make endless profits off intellectual work with computers, which, in a high-tech environment overladen with stimuli, is exceptionally chaotic and hurried and can cause anxiety. The precarization of workers is the foundation of a new subjectivation that dissolves the promises of progressive history and a better future. The solution suggested by Franco Berardi – Bifo lies in new models of economic and social organisation based on solidarity.

All events are in English and are free of charge. If you would like to attend the seminar, please contact urska.comino@maska.si to book a place. The number of places is limited.

Franco Berardi – Bifo’s visit to Ljubljana has been organised by Maska Ljubljana in cooperation with MSUM, Azil Bookshop and the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.
