Gestures of Resistance

MASKA, vol. XXVII, No. 151–151 (winter 2012)

The present thematic supplement that has been conceived by Martina Rusham over the course of almost a year focuses on theatre and art strategies of resistance to the existing neoliberal economic and consequentially political paradigms that have lately left a strong mark on all layers of our social tissue. It addresses the comprehensive corpus of resulting questions and issues by different approaches – through theoretical contributions, case studies, manifestos and even genuine artistic interventions that give the present double issue of Maska a peculiar performative tone.

Our diverse critical considerations are being published at the right time; at a time when the current economic as well as political crises seem to be at their peak, at a time of numerous protests called general Slovenian uprisings that make one believe that the changing of the ruling economic and political paradigms are possible. This has resulted in the decision to publish, besides the thematic supplement Gestures of Resistance, two contributions that complement it in terms of their subject: the first lists the chronology of events unpredictably triggered by the opening of the youth theatre show Zlati sus and supplements it with the opinions of experts from different fields of education and arts; the second addresses the issue of conditions of today’s political theatre.

Instead of an obituary for a dear friend and colleague Maks Sorsak, Sebastijan Horvat found Sorsak’s script for a theatre project that has, unfortunately, never been realised; Horvat added his own thoughts and memories to Maks’ script. Their publication means that Maks’ project has finally reached the world.
