Bojana Kunst: Project's Horizon: On Time, Creativity and Art

Within the Seminar of Contemporary Performing Arts organised by Maska and Cankarjev Dom and within the BCC Programme

Lecture held by Bojana Kunst

Project's Horizon: On Time, Creativity and Art

Over the last decade, a project has been one of most frequently used words among artists, producers and other protagonists in culture. Cultural and other creative workers are involved in a number of projects which often run simultaneously, in their presentation, implementation and completion. Today, a project is the horizon of creative process. In her lecture, Kunst will talk about how this ambiguous word used for various forms of cultural products and artworks includes a special temporal dimension which has not yet been seriously reflected or questioned. Rather than being a characteristic of contemporary labour, the projective temporality is also closely related to the subjective experience of time which erases the differences between individual work gestures and creative contexts, takes creativity its political potentiality and prevents the invention of different, temporary oriented modes of collaboration. Kunst will use some examples of contemporary artworks to illustrate how projective temporality provides the basis of both aesthetic dimension of artworks as well as argumentation to the value and role of art today. It submits the creative process to administrative context, completion and consumption whilst social and cultural value of art solely depends on the speculation on its value (constant production, distribution and sale of art-to-be).The question is not only how to fight the project but how to reconnect creative process and the temporality policy. Maska programme is co-financed by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, Ljubljana Municipality and the European Union within External Actions of the European Union (BCC Programme).
