Art That Constantly Speaks

A marathon of discussions with directors, critics and theoreticians from the early 1990s.

Moderated by participants in the theatre and puppet school GILŠ – KODUM   (1991–1999).

"As with the achievements of the historical avant-garde, what this demanded was not merely new subject matter but imaging of the entire other world, different from the empirical world, with its own language, gesture, imagery, as well as its own attitude toward the body, the passages of time, spatial organization, architecture, design, and the use of objects."

(Bonnie Marranca: The Theatre of Images, New York, 1995 / an excerpt from Bonnie Marranca's afterword for the reprint of 1995, published as a part of Tomaž Toporišič’s essay Gledališče podob, postdramsko gledališče, pozni socializem in postsocializem in the catalogue of the exhibition Razširjeni prostori umetnosti 1985–1995, Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana, 2004)

In the early 1990s, a number of new theatre and dance aesthetics emerged abruptly on the scene. Betontanc, Iztok Kovač and En-Knap, Tomaž Štrucl, Matjaž Berger, Iztok Lovrič, Marko Peljhan, Ema Kugler and many other artists completely agitated the theatre scene of the time and transformed the image of performing arts forever.

In the discussion marathon, thirteen directors will discuss with thirteen critics the selected performances from the early 1990s. Each time the discussion table will host the director of the selected performance, a critic who reviewed it, and the moderator.

Komuna Hall will witness the 'confrontation' of the following participants: Matjaž Berger, Mateja Bučar, Matjaž Farič, Janez Janša, Marko Košnik, Ema Kugler, Iztok Lovrič, Barbara Novakovič, Marko Peljhan, Matjaž Pograjc, Vlado G. Repnik, Tomaž Štrucl, Branko Završan in Eda Čufer, Simon Kardum, Bojana Kunst, Ženja Leiler, Katarina Pejović, Blaž Lukan, Aldo Milohnić, Jana Pavlič, Irena Štaudohar, Tomaž Toporišič.

Marathon will be moderated by: Irena Duša Draž, Jedrt Jež Furlan, Amelia Kraigher, Marko Mandić, Katarina Stegnar, Rok Vevar.

The discussions will be accompanied by photographs and video footage of the performances as well as the interviews with the artists who had an important part in creating these performances. The marathon will be a great opportunity for a re-union of a now dispersed generation and a time to reflect on a brilliant period for Slovenian culture and art.
