Stopover 1:1

Exhibition

Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova

Opening: Thursday, 17 October 2013, at 8 p.m.
Exhibition will be open until 12 January 2014

1:1 is a scale in which these artworks present time, space and individual types of social organisation. One of the principal issues of the 1:1 project is how to capture the relation between an event that presents a work and the work’s duration. Does 1:1 merely present the works that are directly involved in life and are in this sense characterised by a 1:1 scale?

These artworks are not finished products in the sense of the total sum of efforts previously invested in them. The 1:1 project is just a moment in their duration, from which both the works as well as the institution presenting them come out enriched by a new experience. 1:1 tries to overcome the dichotomy between art that is produced out there and interferes with the existing social organisation, and the institution that seems to only take life from such art. The 1:1 ratio is also offered as the relation between the institution and art, as a desired relation of a dialogue.

By actively intervening in the urban space, in the dominant modes of education, cultural production and knowledge production and by violating the existing economy of time, the 1:1 art simultaneously helps forming a different institution.

1:1 artworks may last for months, years and even decades, and as such resist the dictate of incessant change and the demands for rapid adaptability. These works are somewhat a mistake in the system that fosters temporary conditions and ever more new market niches and produces the feeling that all of this is a “natural” part of modern life. The temporariness and impermanence that it brings have become crucial elements in the contemporary mode of production, resulting in increasingly anxious individuals without time of their own or a quality life. Art 1:1 gives life back its time.

Archive Reminder

1:1 will also include the archive-reminder of the Arteast 2000+23 project, first presented by Maska and Moderna galerija in Ljubljana in 2006 when 50 artists submitted their works for the Moderna galerija collection to be exhibited there in 2013.
