Ljubljana, 1st – 5th March 2014

The famous Lenin's (and not just Lenin’s) question gets topical over and over again. The logic of debt, precarity, hopelessness has robbed a contemporary individual of the future and paralysed them in thinking about the future. At Maska’s event What Is To Be Done? held between 1st and 5th March 2014 we shall reflect the social reality through a series of performances, a lecture, a film screening, a workshop and an exhibition. Who Is Next? opens the questions of responsibility of an individual in contemporary society of recession, shock, precariousness, uncertainty and indifference, The Debt of Rakef Saška / The Debt of RS   is based on Saška Rakef’s growing financial debt and blocked personal account and the influence that the debt has on the dynamics of her everyday life, the project All Together Now! "theatrises" the musical material in order to dissect migration, the impossibility of migration, leaving and staying, reasons for persisting and departing while Škrip Inc. reflects the fact of being caught in hypocrisy of advertising, political agitation, cheap sentimentality and brands that determine our self-esteem.

With a series of productions from the recent years that will address Lenin’s question – all of them were acclaimed both by critics and audience – Maska further strengthens and corroborates the status of an organisation that directly and profoundly cuts into the cultural and political tissue in which it operates and persistently promotes a critical discourse.

The performances will be subtitled in English.

In addition to Maska's productions, we also invited the established theoretician Bojana Cvejić who will participate with the lecture entitled The Social Choreography of Proceduralism and the workshop The genealogy of the method "social choreography" – both the lecture and the workshop will be in English – and Marta Popivoda, a film and video artist, the director of the documentary Yugoslavia, How Ideology Moved Our Collective Body; the screening will be followed by a discussion with the artist.

Part of the event is also the exhibition Life II [in progress] by Janez Janša, a co-production with MGLC - International Centre of Graphic Arts. It is literally lives in progress or better yet the "consecration" of life that opens up in all its sublime beauty, playfulness, tenderness…

We will be delighted if you join us at this five-day event.
