Three Orders of Time: 1993 - 2013 - 2023

For New Modes of Artistic Production

Ljubljana, 15–19 October 2013

Changes in legislation in the early 1990s enabled legalisation of new forms of artistic production, which brought about a fierce development of private initiative in culture. During this period, numerous NGOs started functioning, and within them new forms and modes of production emerged and developed that introduced new contents and approaches to art into the Slovenian as well as the international space and, in so doing, achieved top-notch results. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Maska Institute, and in collaboration with several partners, we are preparing a number of events whose aim is to open up new visions of the future of artistic and cultural activities and, at the same time, shed critical light on this future.

Visitors will be able to attend two evenings dedicated to two legendary performances of the early 1990s (How I Caught a Falcon/Kako sem ujel sokola by Iztok Kovač and Noordung Prayer Machine/Molitveni stroj Noordung by Dragan Živadinov), and they will have the opportunity to participate in a marathon in which 13 directors and 13 critics will discuss performances from this period. At the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, the exhibition 1:1, dedicated to artistic production that persists over a longer period of time, will be on display; and there will also be a symposium, Art and Life: Productions of Temporality in Art, which will interrogate modes of production in art. We will round off the event at Metelkova as a representative site of urban sociability. To mark the occasion of Three Orders of Time, a special issue of Maska – The Performing Arts Journal will be published entitled Slovenian Post-Alternative which will be dedicated to reflections on the modes of artistic production over the past two decades.
