The Audience Council

An event of unusual format, The Audience Council, will be held in Stara mestna elektrarna – Elektro Ljubljana on 5 July 2013, where Bunker, Via Negativa, Maska and Društvo za sodobni ples Slovenije will contemplate why their work is in need of an audience and vice versa.

The Council seeks to trigger, establish and maintain the links between various stage practices that gravitate towards the arena of contemporary independent performing arts and thus gradually form a type of performing practice that would on the long term become identified with the “independent Ljubljana scene”.

It is our belief that Ljubljana is an exceptionally fertile and productive epicenter of contemporary performing practices, extending well beyond average in their expression. And despite a relatively high number of groups and individuals, whose original and effective creative procedures have gained wide recognition across European stages, Ljubljana’s independent scene still hasn’t succeeded in bringing its artistic expression together to become articulated on a higher creative level.

The Council seeks to connect numerous stakeholders in the most basic common denominator that constitutes our endeavor into a meaningful activity, namely the spectator. What do we see when we watch, how and why do we watch, how do we retroactively understand what we saw, etc. The Audience Council thus strives to propel a vibrant exchange of exclusively performing experiences, opinions, reflections and expectations. Representatives coming from Via Negativa, G-Fart, Maska and Društvo za sodobni ples Slovenije will discuss the performances that they saw from the side of an audience. Perhaps they sat right next to you, perhaps you didn’t even notice them. It doesn’t really matter. They will articulate every single detail of a performance. From the first minute to the last. And it’s really not about whether these performances are brilliant masterpieces or whether they’re average, it’s not about grades and classifications, it’s not about the overlooked or about the notorious performances, it’s about opening up a space that allows for a difference to emerge, the difference between what we were watching and what we saw. In short, it’s about the spectator’s representation about a performance.

The Audience Council will thus offer the opportunity to hear the artists reflect upon the forthcoming performances, there will be video screenings of this season’s works, the performers present will be invited to articulate their point of view, or perhaps we’ll just enjoy the discussion with a glass of wine.

The event will start at 5 p.m., and is expected to go on until the last drops of wine have been sipped and until the last drops of our strength for socializing and discussion have been spilt.

We kindly ask you to confirm your free attendance at  [email protected].
