..Tomislav Medak

In the framework of the Reflection on Contemporary Art: Seminar of Contemporary Performing Arts, MASKA and Cankarjev dom invite you to the fifth public lecture of Tomislav Medak:
Dispositives - Articulated Societies, Overarticulate Public, Obfuscated Politics

7 March 2011 at 19.00
Cankarjev dom, M3/M4 Hall, Prešernova 10, Ljubljana

Tomislav Medak will revisit Foucault's concept of dispositive, which states that there are two aspects or, speaking in Spinozian terms, two atributes to social ontology: the practical constituted by disciplinary institutions and the epistemological informed by discourses, both premised and made possible by each other. He'll analyze what happens within the phenomena of communicative capitalism where discourse is endlessly reproduced, discourse upon discourse, seemingly disconnected and autonomized form the process of construction of social institutions. The radical democratization of public speech brought about by new media seems to break apart the link between practice and discourse - there's more speech, and less new practices through which it takes effect on the society. Power is carved out from the discourse. We live in an age where the discoursive hyperproduction is on the rise - in politcs, academia, art, media, yet where any institutional change no longer seem possible - we live in a transfixed moment of a transforming society. What is the scope of action, political and artistic, in this opaque reality - that's what I'll try to outline here.
