It is in reflection on dance that artist in the bourgeois era have most consistently focused on two key issues: the limits of art (when does a dance cease to be a dance and become a mere movement?) and the potential of art to provide models for – rather than mere reflections of – social organization.

The two questions that Andrew Hewitt poses in the introduction to his book Social Choreography will serve as a problem and structure framework of this workshop. In its first part, the participants will attempt to determine the performing protocols which produce a surplus that gives a certain everyday activity the status of dance as an art practice, and the other way around, they will try to establish when a certain performance loses the characteristics of an art practice and becomes a cultural or some other practice.

In the second part, proceeding from the established protocols, the participants will create choreographic sequences which, placed in public spaces and seemingly not disturbing their standard forms of movement, create a kind of a break or a cessation, a literal cessation in the space belonging to movement as well as a cessation in its ideological and performing procedures.

In the third part, we will recap and analyse the work done in the first two days. This will involve a discussion on whether the placing of choreographic sequences in public spaces is functional within the mimetic or the performing mode and whether dance is becoming a representation of a social utopia and a brake in its realization or is it a space in which a new social order is being created and in which an integration of all its members is possible.

The workshop is intended for young critics, theoreticians, theatre and dance creators, dramaturges and students in social sciences. The price for outside participants is € 40. You can send your application to jasmina.zaloznik@maska.si.
