Peternelj was born in Ljubljana. In 1996, he graduated at the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana, programme acting and speech training. Until 2003, he was a freelance artist. In 2003, he joined Mladinsko Theatre, Ljubljana.

As an actor and mover, Peternelj collaborated with the group Betontanc (Every Word a Gold Coin’s Worth, 1992; Wet Hanky Thieves, 1993; Know Your Enemy, 1994; On Three Sides of Heaven, 1995) and with the theatre Muzeum (Cricket in the Fist, 1994: Lo Scrittore, 1996, Molière, 2006), Q&A – Very Private, Very Public, Maska, and with numerous other independent productions.

Peternelj appeared in video films by Ema Kugler while working with Mladinsko Theatre. During this time Peternelj started to create independent theatre projects (King of Clubs, Dance Theatre Ljubljana, 1995; Medium Coeli, Glej Theatre, 1998; Being Someone Else, produced by Exodos Ljubljana and co-produced by Institute Exodos and Cankarjev dom; and in the frame of Mladinsko Open: The Bell Ringer, 1997, and The Visages of Sand, 2003).
